Janel Umfress, MS, CCC-SLP
University of the Redlands
When she entered college, Janel realized how she loved the way the field of speech language pathology melded biology, psychology, neuroscience, and education. As a result, her graduate-school focus evolved into an in-depth study of language-based learning disorders. Upon graduation, she quickly jumped right into teaching upper elementary students with severe language disorders in the Claremont, California public schools where she remained for almost 10 years until her own family began to grow. At that point, she shifted gears and ventured into private practice where she has worked ever since.
In her practice, Janel provides one-on-one language and educational therapy to students with various language and learning challenges. Together with the student, she works on how to approach learning processes with more efficiency and effectiveness. She utilizes individualized strategies to grasp content associations and connections in order to make learning more relevant and purposeful. She helps students understand their own learning processes and responses through a trusting, connected, therapeutic relationship. She is also the Learning Specialist at Walden School in Pasadena, and Saint Mark’s School in Altadena. At Saint Mark’s, Janel partners with Dr. Tina Bryson who is the school’s Child Developmental Specialist. Her collaboration with Dr. Bryson supports her strong and long-held belief that learning, behavior and emotions are interrelated. At each school, she works primarily with faculty and families to provide classroom observations and resources, suggested accommodations, and outside referrals for students who require additional support. The unique qualities of each work setting provide her with a broader understanding and appreciation of the diversity of all learners.
She has been married to Sam for nearly thirty years. They have two children, Jena and Harper, who are in their twenties. She gains great satisfaction and frustration with home improvement projects on their 100-year-old house and loves escaping to the beach when she can.
