Sarah Duncan is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Registered Art Therapist (ATR), utilizing creative and expressive modalities to foster healing for her clients. Enjoying working with others, building relationships, and witnessing others stories led her to into the field of mental health.

With a focus in Infant Family Early Childhood Mental Health (IFECMH) and as a current participant in the UCLA DMH Early Childhood Fellowship, she understands the importance of communicating at the child’s level. While working with her clients, she offers play, art, movement, and music interventions to help the development of language, insight, and understanding. Informed by Attachment Theory and developmental psychology, Sarah nurtures the parent-child relationship, holding both perspectives, allowing her to facilitate a healthier family dynamic.

Sarah extends her art therapy practice to clients of all ages, including adults, adolescents, and school-aged children. Through the process of making art, clients interact with their work to have a better understanding of themselves. Sarah also utilizes her dance and studio arts background to enhance her ability to connect with individuals of all ages. Her connection with the arts has also encouraged her to explore the therapeutic potential of creative modalities.

Sarah’s experience and training come from field/home-based community mental health, schools, and clinical settings. Believing it takes a village to raise a child, she understands the importance of collaboration with providers, including pediatricians, teachers, psychologists, DCFS, and social workers. Before becoming a mental health clinician, she spent time in the world of education, working as an infant-toddler teacher.

In addition to her LMFT and ATR qualifications, Sarah has acquired certifications in Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and Managing and Adapting Practice (MAP). She has also taken training in Reflective Parenting Programs, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Play Therapy, and other trauma-informed and culturally humble modalities, helping her offer the best care to her clients.

Outside of her professional life, Sarah enjoys the arts and movement, and you can often find her at a dance or yoga studio. As a Los Angeles native, she finds solace and inspiration by spending time at the beach with her family and rescue puppy Scout.
