About

The Center for Connection and Neurodiversity is a safe space where we celebrate the differences in each other. The CFCN was founded on six core values: Identity-everyone has the right to live their true selves,  accessibility-everyone has the right to access their meaningful activities or seek the right support to help them access their community, inclusion-everyone has the right to feel a sense of deep belonging not just tolerated, advocacy-we believe that it is our duty to advocate for those whose voice is marginalized or silenced, community and connection-we believe in building a space that is safe and connects others together and with that comes true health and happiness.

Co-directors, Olivia and Amanda found each other at a local school district when they were partnered to develop the occupational therapy program- and the rest was history.  Fast-forward several years and when the opportunity to start a practice of their dreams, it was a no brainer. Together, Amanda and Olivia have forty years working with client’s infant to adulthood. Their decades of experience combined with staying up-to-date on the latest neuroscience from experts across professions and learning from the lived experiences of disabled and neurodiverse people, informs their practice. They firmly support interventions that are relational, based on neuroscience, and informed by the exact population they are serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Occupational Therapy?

In our world, “occupations” refers to meaningful activities. There are many things that might impact you or your child’s ability to access the activities that are meaningful to you. For an adult this might mean support after a late in life diagnosis of Autism or sensory processing disorder. For children this might mean support with motor skills, impulse control, emotional regulation, or sensory processing disorder. Occupational therapy can help in many ways, including strengthening weak skills, teaching new skills, helping adapt activities or the environment to make it accessible, or assisting with advocating for support within your environment.

What is a therapy room?

The therapy room is a vital place to safely “try-on” new ideas, move your body, and explore a variety of sensory experiences in a therapeutic way. The therapy room can be described as a large room with multi-sensory equipment, such as swings, climbing equipment, weights, trampoline, tactile bins, and more. Our space is designed with regulation in mind.

When is it time to reach out for therapy?

  • If a teacher, psychologist, or physician has suggested Occupational Therapy

  • When developmental milestones are delayed

  • If you feel that you or your child is having difficulty processing sensory stimuli (struggling with engaging in everyday environment because of the sensory input)

  • If your child is struggling with behaviors

  • If your child is struggling with their motor skills

  • If you are still unsure, reach out and we will talk you through it

OT School House: Sensory, Stress, & Behavior

Today, I am welcoming Olivia Martinez-Hauge, MFTA, OTR/L, back to the podcast . Olivia is a school-based OT, a parent of a child with special needs, and a soon to be licensed marriage and family therapist as she furthers her education to support children with special needs. In this episode, Olivia and I are going to provide updates as to how this year has gone compared to our expectations back in August. We will then dive into some pressing issues like person first versus disability first language, ableism, non-preferred activity goals, how OTs address behavior, and how stress plays a role in behavior. You are going to love these discussions.
